Big Boy X Model – Photo credit: Justin Holt

Terry Nelson with OutdoorHub.com recently published an article that explores the topic of using lever action carbine rifles for defense and survival scenarios. In this article, he reviews both the Big Boy Steel Carbine in .357 Mag/.38 Spl (H012MR) and the Big Boy X Model .44 Mag/.44 Spl (H012X) and provides his thoughts on the functionality from a practical defense perspective.

If you don’t yet own a pistol caliber lever action carbine, these make fantastic choices due to their versatility. With the right load, these firearms can do it all from hunting, protecting, and pairing well with your favorite revolver in the same caliber.

    I’ll buy your first 3.

A 9mm lever action would be very neat. I love Henry products they are well built I own a long ranger and love it.

Great idea! The Luger round would be a great designation to a Henry rifle.

        CUTE!

If your in a movie or tv show.

This is a great way to get butchered in the real world.

Keep hanging onto guns you like because a romance you had with a fictional character though.

First rule of a gun fight, have a gun. A pistol caliber lever gun is fast and accurate to 100yds. How many people do you know who can correctly fire and control an M4 in full auto? One hit is better than 30 misses!!

In this email with the walnut short barreled lever action, I was wondering does Henry have the leather rifle sling and leather cartridge butt stock for sale or where can can I contact the vendor who makes this accessory for Henry. Thank you

        Big Boy X Model…comes in .357/.38 spec and .45 Colt…also .44 mag/.44 spec….and a side loader…new and rare right now…

I’m puzzled as to why the most usful cartridge in a short carbine, the 10mm, isn’t widely available as an option to the several companies offerings in 9mm. The 10mm stretches the usfulness of a survival carbine to medium game like deer, yet with hard ball can still serve small game need. Finaly it provides much better protection against toothy critter dangers.

        April 2, 2020

the Henry big boy is available in 41 magnum which has the same performance as the 10mm. but with the rimmed casing it’s better served in a lever action

      • Jeff
        April 3, 2020

The .41 magnum up forms to 10 mm by over 300 ft./s with the same 180 grain bullet according to multiple reloading manuals that I’ve checked. So for performance, a .41 mag is far better. That said if you want to match the ammunition handgun to rifle a 10 mm might be an interesting choice.

      April 3, 2020

Would LOVE a 9mm All Weather with side load! If truly using it in “all weather” it’s a bit tough to reload in rain or snow when you have to undo and reload the ammo tube than to reload via side load. Just makes more sense with speed, efficiency and less potential debris getting in the tube in dirty or muddy conditions. Plus, 9mm would match my sidearm, so savings on ammo!

    • Mirza Baig
      April 3, 2020

      I’ll buy it too

    • Tim Starkey
      April 3, 2020

Or a 9mm Golden Boy! I’d pay just to get on the waiting list for that. I’ve been sniffing around for a Ruger PC carbine, but it would be so ugly sitting there next to my Henry.

I have a 44 mag level rifle its a marlin and I have had it for sometime it’s accurate at 100 yards a 5 shot in a 3 inch And I have taken a few big deer in West Virginia mountains one shot placement. I used to hunt with a handgun S/M 8 1/2 inch barrel and getting older I could not handle the recoil so I bought the rifle I hand load most of my ammunition so I think that you would like the 44 mag rifle not a lot of recoil and fun to shoot!

    • Bill
      April 2, 2020

Oscar, if you live in SoCal, particularly Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley there is a gun store in Temple City about 10 min southeast of Pasadena that is a Gold star Henry dealer. It’s called The Firing Pin.
But they may be all out at this time because of that Covid 19 panic.

    I 2nd that idea/ suggestion!

9mm lever action or 45ACP WITH THREADED BARREL!!

I WOULD DEFF BUY ONE OF EACH!

Back in the day when I was a young family man living paycheck to paycheck my home defense gun was a Model 94 Win 30/30. Over the years that 30/30 carbine idea plagued me. Now at 79 that ole m-94 got retired long ago but now I’m replacing my S&W 357 wheel gun with a Henry in 30/30 carbine. I’ve tested, the carbine is easier handling than Revolvers or Pistols for an old man.

  • Ron Parker
    April 2, 2020

I currently own 6 Henry rifles. I enjoy them all. My next Henry purchase will probably be 44 magnum, but I do like the idea if a pistol caliber.

    • Emanuel Adamache
      April 2, 2020

Don’t let the idea of a pistol caliber fool you. Due to the longer barrel of rifles, a pistol bullet will have considerable more muzzle velocity than you would get in a revolver. Yes, it’s the same cartridge but that bullet is flying out of there much faster. Look up Paul Harrell on YouTube where he demonstrates the differences. He’s very professional and trustworthy.

I love my Henry carbine in 357 mag, and the combo is a handloaders dream.

By far the best Henry for defense and survival however is the Long Ranger in 308 win, IF one is a handloader. The flexibility, reliability and accuracy is unmatched.

What are your thoughts on 30-30 winchester

      • Rick P.
        April 3, 2020

The 30-30 has probably taken more white tail deer in Pennsylvania than any other caliber. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen revolvers made in 30-30, by Magnum Research of IWI. I’m pretty sure it was from Israel.

i have 2 Henry’s a 22 yellow boy and a 44mag big boy. while the workman ship on both guns is amazing. i can’t hit the wall of a barn while inside with the doors locked with the 44 Mag
i have tried all kinds of factory ammo.. my own reloads. and none of them can put a bullet in the same place twice.. even mounted in a gun rest the best group is 12 inches
the best group i ever got was with 180grn rn . and that was 10 inchs at 50 yrds.
i, bought this rifle brand new about 4 or 5 yrs ago and spent all this time trying to find a load that will work.
all this testing was at 50 yrds
anyone have any ideas beside sending it back to Henry.
the 22 by the way will keep a 1.50 inch group with anything i feed it the bigboy is misserable .. i’m so disappointed

I agree with the idea of a 9mm lever action rifle/carbine. There are lots of gun owners with 9mm pistols who would appreciate a well-made, reliable long gun in a caliber that allows to feed their pistol the same ammunition.

  • William Kohnke
    April 3, 2020

From a tactical standpoint I’d like them better if they had a ghost ring rear sight mounted on the receiver and a large tang mounted safety that is disengaged by pushing it forward.

I went pure cowboy for self defense. 45 long colt and 410 self defense. long guns, pistols, snake slayer, and derringer. Local gun shop questions my 410 choice but the pattern at 10 feet from the derringer would be a deterrent.

  • Grady Baggett

Carbine rifles look good. Any chance for a 9mm in the near future? My pistols are 9mm and don’t want to have to have separate ammo. Thank you,

  • Charles Eichman
    April 3, 2020

There is no reason not to include a side loading gate on a pistol caliber rifle. It is faster, safer for defense, and with the loading tube also safer for unloading. However there are those of us who like the original walnut look and not the “tactical” look and should have this option. There should be a gun length that would handily fit ten rounds which would not be much longer. Has Henry thought of a “peep” sight for a “regular” gun as an option with a different front sight paired with it. These are wonderful guns to have when carried with a 357 S&W 686 or Ruger G100 seven shot revolvers.

I have inquired with Henry Repeating Arms my interest in the Henry AXE 410 and have requested making an Upper Receiver that Ejects Shell Casings on the Left Side to include Loading Chamber for Left Hand Firers.
I am hoping, that CEO/Owner Mr. Anthony Imperado will consider this as a New Market Sales that Opens Henry Fire Arms to Lefthanded Firers.

HENRY AXE 410 SOUTH PAW with S.B.R. Conversion Shoulder Stock

The surpresser (sp) your using, does it have to be cleaned often and if not, how many rounds can go through it before you have problems. Also, the one that you have on the gun in the picture with the fellow in camo, looks like it’s so big around that it’s covering the front sight. Am I looking at it wrong?

  • John
    April 3, 2020

I wish Henry would make more rifles with synthetic stocks. They are so practical! Henry rifles are almost too beautiful to use. I would shoot mine more if I wasn’t so afraid of it getting scratched. It’s still in mint condition and I’m determined to keep it like that. A 9mm carbine would be awesome. I already own two, but a Henry 9mm carbine with a really nice synthetic stock would be a dream come true! Sign me up right now!

Go with that Henry X model in 44 magnum with a can on it; it will take care of any 2 legged predators and will serve as a good medium range deer rifle. Don’t have to use a really hot load if you don’t want to; that .44 bullet puts a nice, big hole in whatever it hits! Great setup, and you can get by with one rifle this way, if you’d like.

I received my new Henry Long Ranger in .223/5.56 and I am very pleased with this rifle. Looks good, feels great in my hands and I’m
anxious to shoot this rifle. The checkering is really nice and the lever action is smooth just like what you should expect from a Henry. Should be a great varmint gun. As soon as I can get my hands on some good .223 ammo I will enjoy a day at the range.

All I need now is a gun case and I’m all set.

I own a Henry Golden Boy .22 & prefer it over my Ruger 10-22. It forces you to focus & enjoy every shot because you have to do more than just pull the trigger. I would also buy a 9mm Henry in a heart beat . I own several 9mm pistols & carbines and I don’t want more than 2 types of bullet caliber ammunition. I am of the simple belief that a well placed shot from either of these calibers is enough to at least change the mind of a “predator”, if not ruin their day. For me, my shooting time is focused on killing empty beer cans or flying clay pigeons.
