Joel’s Wildfire

Wildland firefighters run toward danger when everyone else is running away. They endure blistering heat, choking smoke, steep terrain, and long, isolated deployments far from home, all to protect the communities and land we love.

For Joel Eisiminger of Southern Oregon, that work wasn’t just a job. It was a calling.

Joel spent six seasons as a wildland firefighter, hiking deep into the backcountry with his crew, carrying heavy equipment on his shoulders, cutting fire lines through burning forests, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the brothers who became his family. It was grueling work, but Joel thrived on the camaraderie and purpose of protecting others.
Then, in July of 2024, while battling a wildfire in Northern California, something went terribly wrong.

A crewmate noticed Joel’s face suddenly drooping. At first, they feared he was having a stroke. Within days of arriving at the hospital, Joel received devastating news: he had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive blood cancer rarely seen in someone so young. He was only 25 years old at the time.

Doctors told him he needed immediate chemotherapy and blood transfusions just to have a chance of survival. But like thousands of contract wildland firefighters across the country, Joel did not have health insurance through his work. The medical bills began piling up almost immediately.

Still, Joel’s spirit remains the same as it was on the fireline. He’s resilient, determined, and unbreakable.
